Virtual anthropology

Virtual anthropology applies anthropological questions and methods to social life in digital environments. It can examine how people form relationships, develop norms, assign meaning, and adapt their practices through platforms, online communities, games, and interactions with AI.

Study practices in context

Attend to participants’ perspectives and the conditions shaping their behavior: platform design, moderation, access, community history, and the presence of researchers or automated systems. Interpret observations carefully rather than treating online activity as transparent evidence of a person’s identity or intent.

Research should respect privacy, consent, safety, and the expectations of the communities involved. Public availability does not by itself make data ethically uncomplicated. Be clear about methods, limitations, and how observations support conclusions.

Questions to ask
